Cut out for Superhero
Organic fabrics are out; synthetics are in. Elasticity is
THE X-factor, but only after durability (mind you, this includes all-weather
protection). But this time around, absence of fashion sense is officially a
deficiency in character. Designers are surging ahead and never looking back
(leaving Superman behind for the lack of it).
She is called out of a 15-year period of imposed retirement
to repair the damages on Mr. Incredible's supersuit, but ended up crafting a
series of completely new, matching outfits for the entire family. For safety
reasons, she is very insistent on not including capes in the new designs (thank
God! There have been one too many capes around). Imperious, talented and
demanding, she’s the sort that stands out in the crowd. Ladies and gentleman,
meet Edna “E” Mode – half-Japanese, half-German fashion designer and auteur
from the movie The Incredibles.
Edna has been creating custom-made original outfits for
superheroes for a long time, saying that she designs for Gods. Due to her near
impossible talent in fashion design and with fabric, she may possess minor
super-intelligence to have thought of some brilliant inventions. For example,
the minimum width of Elastigirl is 1 mm on the National Supers Agency file featured
on the special-edition DVD, her supersuit is missile-proof, resistant to
extreme temperatures, and the supergirl can implausibly stretch far and wide
(without injuring herself) whilst maintaining her original shape despite
executing various sorts of action and breathing like Egyptian cotton – c’est
parfait!
E Mode, who presented the Best Costume Design Oscar at the
2004 Academy Awards alongside Pierce Brosnan, depicts a combination of fashion
maven/gadget builder along the lines of 'Q' from the James Bond movies. She is
rumoured to be a portrayal of real-life fashion designer, the late Edith Head
and possibly Mary Quant. She may also have a vague connection to super-editor
of Vogue and fashion force Anna Wintour, while her catchphrase of
"dahling" may be a reference to British actress, Tallulah Bankhead.
Whoever she may be, her expertise definitely lies in superstylin’.
